EBS Tournament - 2002

Season recap

Miami (FL) returned a dominant team who ended the regular season on a 34 game winning streak. The lone other undefeated team was Ohio State, who found success thanks in part to freshman RB Maurice Clarett. The Buckeyes beat Washington State (with defensive standouts DB Marcus Trufant and DT Rien Long) in September and shared the Big Ten title with QB Brad Banks's Iowa Hawkeyes (the teams did not meet during the regular season). Georgia won the SEC, suffering its only loss to rival Florida. Heisman winner Carson Palmer led S. California to a Pac-10 championship in Pete Carroll's second year as head coach.

- Rankings determined using the current (enacted 2005) BCS formula with the following exceptions:
- The AP Poll was substituted for the Harris Poll.
- Under BCS rules at the time, computer rankings were allowed to consider margin-of-victory in their calculations. They are included as is.
- Teams for which computer rankings were unavailable were given a computer average of zero and are shown only to attempt to qualify the ranking of automatic qualifiers outside the top 15.
