EBS Tournament - 2009

Season recap

As was the case in 2004, five teams finished the regular season undefeated. Alabama, with Heisman trophy winner RB Mark Ingram, and Texas, led by multiple Heisman finalist QB Colt McCoy, finished in the top two spots in the poll. Coach Brian Kelly guided Cincinnati to its first undefeated season since 1918, joining the 2004 Auburn squad as undefeated BCS conference champions excluded from national title contention. TCU's smothering defense helped earn the Horned Frogs their first EBS bye, and Boise St finished a second-straight undefeated regular season (including a victory over Pac-10 champion Oregon).

The Florida Gators had their 22 game winning streak snapped by Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, QB Tim Tebow's last regular season game, but still earned a #5 ranking. Georgia Tech won the ACC in their second year of running Paul Johnson's triple option offense, and Iowa garnered its second EBS bid (first since 2002). The 2009 season was the third time for which the top 12 teams in the BCS poll all qualified for the EBS tournament (others were 2003 & 2007).
